Regarding updating/upgrading to Pi-Star Version 4.1.7 & 4.1.8
I’ve set up a secure server where customers – ONLY CUSTOMERS can to go to download an almost completely configured version of Pi-Star 4.2.0 for their DuraSpot or ShackSpot.
Scroll down to see how to proceed…
Regarding recent updating/upgrading to Pi-Star Version 4.1.7 & 4.1.8
This is definitely a software issue, your hardware will be fine.
At this point in time I won’t be supplying configured replacement Micro SD cards.
ShackSpot – All models.
DO NOT UPDATE PI-STAR through the Pi Star dashboard or through the ShackSpot’s Touch Screen.
ALSO… Leave your hotspot SWITCHED OFF OVERNIGHT so auto update doesn’t run.
REASON: There’s some bugs with Pi Star currently.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY UPDATED TO Version 4.1.8 or your hotspot was left on overnight you may see missing data on your screen.
Your hotspot should still be working fine even if the screen isn’t.
Easy way to check is to login to your hotspot’s Pi Star dashboard and check all of your configuration is still there, and watch the Admin page.

REASON: There’s some bugs with Pi Star currently.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY UPDATED TO Version 4.1.8 or your hotspot was left on overnight you may see missing data on your screen or nothing at all on your screen.
Your hotspot should still be working fine even if the screen isn’t.

The Pi-Star team are aware and are working on this.
Remember Pi-Star is provided by volunteers and is totally free for us to use.
What’s happening is they are working on some major changes such as the addition of the M17 mode plus they are moving towards Pi-Star version 4.2 which has a very different back end.
As these updates are rolled out there will be bugs, we just have to be patient.
THE FIX:
FIRST UP check is to login to your hotspot’s Pi Star dashboard and check all of your configuration is still there, and watch the Admin page to see if it’s working. If it is then scroll down this page to see the screen settings.
If Your Hotspot has totally crashed then you can download this mostly configured Pi-Star image.
I’ve set up a secure server where customers – ONLY CUSTOMERS can to go to download an almost completely configured version of Pi-Star 4.2.0 for their DuraSpot or ShackSpot.
DuraSpot – the upgrade to 4.2.0 will fix all issues. You’ll notice that there will now be some additional data on the screen, this is part of the upgrade in this new version.
ShackSpot – THIS MAY NOT BE A COMPLETE FIX! At this point in time the upgrade to 4.2.0 will get your hotspot up and running again, but the screen may not display all data. As the Pi-Star team roll out updates this will be corrected.
You’ll need a card reader and I recommend using Balena Etcher software (free download) to write to your micro SD card.
This file will require configuration by you via the Pi-Star dashboard.
Write the file to your micro SD card, needs to be a quality brand class 10 at least 8gb in size. Your original card should be fine.
Your WiFi will need to be configured, the best way to get internet to your hotspot during the whole configuration process is to connect via Ethernet.
The file is zipped, you can write the zipped file directly to the card if using Balena Etcher as it will unzip then write it.
This file is version 4.2.0 with a dashboard date of 06/02/2024
Along the way the current bugs will be rectified by the Pi-Star team so you can run update manually or just leave your hotspot on overnight and it will auto-update.
