All of my hardware is open source, this means that each component is replaceable should you experience a failure outside of warranty. The MMDVM firmware is open source and written by hams.

The Pi-Star software is open source and written by hams.

The Hamvoip software used in the DuraNode is open source and written by hams.

I’m a solid promoter of “your right to repair”. That’s the difference between my builds and the openSPOT’s, which are a proprietary product with no information on how to repair the hardware outside of warranty. Another consideration with them is that their firmware updates aren’t supported long term.

Don’t get me wrong, the openSPOT is a good product, in fact I have three of them! These are just some things to consider when parting with your hard earned dollars.
